Validation, Monitoring and Verification of the Ethiopia to Kenya electrical interconnection

The project encompasses construction of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line of 1,068 km from Wolayta-Sodo in Ethiopia to Longonot in Kenya (437 km in Ethiopia and 631 km in Kenya). It includes construction of associated alternating current/direct current (AC/DC) converter stations and substations with a transfer capacity of 2,000 MW. The transmission line will evacuate power from Ethiopia that will be predominantly generated from hydropower and other renewables sources such as wind, to displace electricity that would have been generated mainly from fossil fuels in Kenya. For this project, supported by the CDM Loan Scheme, Carbon Limits developed the methodology, analysed GHG emissions reductions, developed the MRV plan, and carried out detailed financial analysis.
