Project description

As part of a Nordic partnership with CIT Renergy (Sweden) and Motiva services (Finland), Carbon Limits delivered a comprehensive assessment of the current waste incineration sector in the Nordic countries ( Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark). It gathered insights on the role of the sector along with the opportunities and challenges it may face in the future. Indicators such as historical evolution of waste volumes, energy generation, technology developments and CCUS, emissions, legislative framework, and circular economy policy targets were gathered for each country.

The waste incineration sector plays a societal role as waste treatment and energy generation service.  However, this role needs to be balanced against circular economy goals and emissions reduction interests. It rises then a central question on the future role of waste incineration and its optimal sizing. A case study for the Norwegian sector has been conducted to highlight potential challenges and possible projections for the volume of waste treated by the sector.
