CO2 Transport Techno-Economic Assessment

CCUS (Carbon-dioxide (CO2) capture, utilization, and storage) is recognized as one of the critical technologies for global climate change mitigation and potentially enables a multitude of different industries to reduce their carbon footprint by capturing emissions at their place of origin and consecutively either reuse and/or store them on- or off-site from capture. In the case where on-site utilization or storage is not possible, captured CO2 often needs to be safely transported to a secondary location. Transportation of CO2 is connected to various degrees of restrictions depending on the physical state of the good (e.g., liquid, solid or gaseous) or the chosen type of transport.
A CCU project developer reached out to Carbon Limits to get an overview of among others the CO2 transport options available (truck, train, barge, pipeline, ship), their characteristics, land footprint, costs, carbon footprint, the regulation associated to the transport mode and timing of deployment. Indeed, for some of their projects, CO2 utilisation cannot be performed at the same place as CO2 capture and in those cases transport should/could be considered. While much of the final analysis is applicable for most (inter)national CO2 transport, an in-depth analysis has been done for 6 specific sites involving at least one CO2 source and off-site utilisation location.
